Open Monument Day 2026

As one of the last remaining testimonies to Berlin’s founding history, the ruins of the Franciscan monastery church are among the city’s most important architectural monuments that are open to the public and used for cultural purposes. Located in the historic and modern center of Berlin, it is considered an outstanding example of medieval architecture. Since 2016, artists and curators have been invited each year to shed new light on the monastery ruins and open up fresh perspectives.

Open Monument Day has been held nationwide since 1993 as part of European Heritage Days. Every year on the second Sunday in September—and in Berlin also on the Saturday before—monument owners and volunteer heritage enthusiasts open the doors to architectural, archaeological, and garden monuments that are not normally accessible to the public. Open Monument Day is the largest and most popular event dedicated to historic preservation. In Berlin, visitors can generally choose from nearly 1,000 events across all districts free of charge. This makes the Open Monument Weekend Berlin’s largest collaboratively organized cultural project.

This year’s Open Monument Day is themed “NetzWERKE: Monuments & Infrastructure” and will take place on September 12 and 13 in Berlin. The program will be released on August 1, 2026.
